Is Centre County’s first Aldi grocery store on the way? Here are the plans
Weis Markets, Giant and Wegman’s could have some competition as a new grocery store is planned for the State College area.
According to a land development plan submitted last week, the first phase of Patton Crossing will include the discount supermarket chain Aldi. The Patton Township Board of Supervisors unanimously approved the master plan in the fall. Patton Crossing, a 30-acre project, will be located at the former Penn State Mobile Home Park and is led by developers Bob Poole, Ara Kervandjian and Heidi Nicholas.
The Aldi would be located in the northwest corner of the development. A traffic study has been conducted of the area, and PennDOT is reviewing the results. An entrance drive would be constructed opposite Woodycrest Street, according to the development plan.
This would be Centre County’s first Aldi.
The store would have an underground stormwater management facilities, paved parking and curbing, lighting and sidewalks to connect the business to the rest of the proposed development.
Patton Crossing includes a mix of residential and commercial buildings with three parking areas dispersed throughout the site.
In September, Poole said developers want to construct Patton Crossing in a way that will benefit the community, its members and the businesses that will move onto the site.
“This is a big project, and it’s an important project,” Poole said in September. “It’s different than what’s been done here in State College ... I think you’re going to love it, and I hope to heck we’re going to do this quick.”
The township planning commission will review the proposal in March, and the board of supervisors must vote on the development plan by May 3.
