Neither rain nor global pandemic could stop the celebration for LifeLink PSU graduates
Neither rain nor a global pandemic could dampen the spirits of the six LifeLink PSU graduates on Thursday.
While their typical graduation ceremony and celebration were canceled due to COVID-19 mitigation efforts, the State College Area School District and community members made sure the students’ accomplishments didn’t go unrecognized.
More than 20 decorated vehicles, Boalsburg Fire Company fire engines and patrol cars from the Centre County Sheriff’s Office and several local police departments lined up at the State College Area High School, then traveled to each of the graduates’ homes.
A Forever Media van blasted Kool and the Gang’s “Celebration,” as people — clad in streamers and, of course, masks — got out of their vehicles to dance and cheer for the graduates. Graduation yard signs were also dropped off, along with the graduates’ certificates and plaques, a dinner from Olive Garden and other “graduation treats.”
“Tonight was supposed to be LifeLink PSU’s graduation, and since we weren’t able to have their graduation, which is a huge event, we’re bringing graduation to them,” LifeLink program coordinator Ellen Cannizzaro said. “We have so many people who love these kids and are ready to go celebrate and surprise them.”
Each of the graduates came out of their homes to greet the parade and join in the celebration — from a safe distance.
LifeLink PSU is a joint program between SCASD and Penn State that serves students ages 18-21 with special needs by providing academic programs, work experience and mentoring to prepare them for life after graduation.
“We really appreciate everything they’ve (the graduates) put into their development and our program,” State College Superintendent Bob O’Donnell said.
