Patton Township bridge repair project will start this week. Expect to see crews through summer
Drivers should expect changes in traffic as PennDOT crews begin work on Valley Vista Drive this week.
Starting Wednesday, preservation work on the bridge, which spans Interstate 99, will begin as northbound drivers merge onto the road via the Valley Vista/Park Forest exit. Once complete, the bridge status will be upgraded from “fair” to “good,” according to a PennDOT release.
The 377-foot bridge was built in 1970 and is traveled by more than 4,100 vehicles each day.
All work will be done in accordance with the Centers for Disease Control and state Department of Health guidelines and a project-specific COVID-19 safety plan. Workers are required to maintain social distancing and wear face coverings while on site.
Preservation work will be completed using half-width phasing. Barriers will be put in place to divert traffic onto the shoulder until the first phase is complete.
Once the project enters the second phase of construction, the barriers will be relocated, and use of the travel lane will be permitted.
According to PennDOT, short-term lane closures will be in effect until the end of each work day.
Work on the $2.2 million project includes approach slab and strip seal replacement, concrete repairs to the deck, piers and abutments, painting, paving, guide rail installation and pavement marking. Preservation efforts will be completed by HRI, Inc. in State College.
The project is expected to be complete in mid-August.
