PennDOT offers update to roadwork on North Atherton Street. (Expect delays ... again.)

The $13 million roadwork project along North Atherton Street is set to finally be completed in two months but, until then, motorists should again expect delays.

According to PennDOT, at the Curtin Road intersection, traffic will be reduced to a single lane in each direction from Tuesday through next Friday while work is being performed. The center turning lane will also be closed.

A PennDOT spokesperson said it’s likely traffic delays will continue after that — but PennDOT will offer specifics on a weekly basis. For now, after the Memorial Day weekend, flaggers will again be directing traffic and motorists can expect to be stopped “for short periods of time.” (No lane closures will be in effect Friday through Monday in observance of Memorial Day.)

“Drivers should use both lanes to merge points throughout the project to minimize traffic queuing and travel times through the work zone,” PennDOT said in a news release. “Motorists are also reminded not to block signalized intersections when the signal is red as this prevents traffic from side streets from crossing the roadway.”

The road construction from Aaron Drive to Park Avenue was proposed in 2015, began in February 2018 and is slated to finish in late June or early July of this year. Work includes the relocation of utility lines, sewer lines and water lines; drainage improvements; curbing; sidewalks; ADA ramps; traffic signal upgrades; a new concrete median and paving.

State College’s Glenn O. Hawbaker, Inc. is the contractor on the job worth exactly $12.795 million.

For more information, PennDOT encourages residents to visit the project page at penndot.gov/AthertonStreet. Or those interested can check conditions on that roadway and more than 40,000 others by visiting 511PA.com or following @511PAStateColl on Twitter.

According to PennDOT, the project is 95% complete.
