Motorcycle rider seriously injured in State College-area crash, police say
A motorcycle rider was injured Tuesday in a two-vehicle crash along South Atherton Street in College Township, State College police wrote in a statement.
The 27-year-old man, whom police did not further identify, was flown by medical helicopter to UPMC Altoona for treatment of serious injuries that are not life-threatening, Sgt. Martin Hanes said.
The motorcyclist and the driver of an SUV crashed about 2:50 p.m. Tuesday near the intersection of South Atherton Street and West Branch Road, police wrote.
The department did not release details about the crash, including whether drugs, alcohol or speed are believed to be a factor. An investigation is ongoing.
The four occupants of the SUV were not injured, police wrote. The southbound lanes of South Atherton Street between East and West Branch roads were closed for about three hours.
Borough police were also assisted by Patton Township and Ferguson Township police.
There were 61 crashes that involved a motorcycle with either serious or fatal injuries between 2011 and 2020 in Centre County, according to state Department of Transportation data. Only two were reported in 2020, the fewest in at least two decades.
