State College cyclist, father of 2 dies after crash with teen driver in residential neighborhood

A State College cyclist died Friday, one day after a crash with a teenage driver in a residential neighborhood.

Juan Sajbin Osorio, 36, died after being flown by medical helicopter to UPMC Altoona, Blair County Deputy Coroner Rachel Derby said Monday.

In a GoFundMe page that was started Saturday and identifies him as Jose Sajvin, organizer Paige Castellanos wrote that he was a husband and father of two children, including a toddler.

“Jose was a kind and friendly man who worked hard to provide for his family,” Castellanos wrote. “May he now rest in peace.”

He was riding about 7:55 p.m. Thursday along the bikeway that crosses Edgewood Circle in the borough’s Greentree neighborhood when he collided with a 16-year-old driving a sedan, borough police Capt. Greg Brauser said.

An investigation is ongoing. The driver was not injured, Brauser said.

Hundreds of people donated more than $11,000 to the fundraising site as of Monday. The family is making plans for his funeral services, as well as his repatriation to his native Guatemala.

“The financial burden of this for a family that was already struggling to make ends meet is practically impossible. But as a community, we can lift this family up and provide some peace during this tragic event,” Castellanos wrote. “Please consider donating to help (Sajbin Osorio’s wife) cover the immediate costs of funeral services, to send his body to Guatemala so he can be in his final resting place, and to support this family who is left without their sole income provider.”

There were two fatal crashes between 2012 and 2021 in Centre County that involved a bicycle and vehicle, state Department of Transportation data showed. One was reported in State College, while the other was reported in Ferguson Township.
