Get ready for traffic delays: $31M roadwork project to soon start on Atherton Street
A 2-plus year, $31 million roadwork project is set to start Monday on Atherton Street in State College — and the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation is already alerting motorists to potential delays.
The overall project, which should be completed by fall 2024, runs from Curtin Road to just beyond Westerly Parkway. Among the specific work next week:
- July 25-29 — in and around the downtown area — Crews will be placing long-term signage and message boards ahead of sewer line relocation work, which is set to begin Aug. 1.
- July 26-27 — corner of Atherton Street and College Avenue; corner of Buckout Street and College Avenue — One lane will be closed on College Avenue and another on Atherton, as crews work to partially remove concrete islands and then pave. Traffic signals will be in flash mode with flaggers controlling the flow of traffic at the intersections.
- July 27-28 — Atherton Street, between College Avenue and Beaver Avenue — Traffic signals will be in flash mode with flaggers controlling the flow of traffic at the intersections while crews plan to be saw-cutting.
PennDOT anticipates that some detours will be in use starting next month.
Weekly updates and roadwork specifics will be published at penndot.gov/AthertonStreet to better alert the public on what areas to avoid and where to expect delays. Drivers can also visit 511PA.com to check current roadway conditions.
Overall work for the South Atherton Street project includes improvements to the drainage network, roadway, concrete curbing, traffic signals and pedestrian crossings. It also involves the relocation of several water and sewer lines, among other changes.
The contractor for the $30,702,634 project is State College’s HRI Inc.
PennDOT reminds motorists to use caution when traveling through the work zones and to use both lanes to the merge point, to avoid further delays.
