What to know about stepping into the forest and exploring trails at Gray’s Woods Preserve
Residents of central Pennsylvania are fortunate to have opportunities to step into the forest and explore trails by foot or bike without a lengthy drive from town. One example of such a place is Gray’s Woods Preserve, located off Grays Woods Boulevard in Port Matilda and roughly a six-minute drive from ClearWater Conservancy’s office.
Gray’s Woods Preserve is a 149-acre property, approximately 112 football fields in size, that was acquired by Patton Township in 2017 through its Open Space program. The area is home to vernal pools, forest and barrens habitat that includes rare vegetation that many animals rely on. In February 2022, ClearWater Conservancy and Patton Township, with support from the Hamer Foundation, finalized a conservation easement to permanently protect these important natural resources and ensure the preserve is always open to the public.
The public is invited to join Centred Outdoors for guided activities at Gray’s Woods Preserve on July 31 and Aug. 3. On Sunday at 1 and 3 p.m. and Wednesday at 6 p.m., Centred Outdoors’ Adventure Coordinator, Bridget Whyte, will lead participants on a 2-mile hike through the preserve while sharing about its ecological significance as it relates to the region’s water and wildlife.
Also on Sunday at 2 p.m., participants can join Master Life Coach Beth Shaha for a wellness activity, “Nurture Yourself with Nature.” During this time, participants will be guided on a multi-sensory, easy walk to heighten creativity and discover new possibilities. All events are free and open to the public.
There are two parks within walking distance of Gray’s Woods Preserve that include areas to enjoy a picnic or simply relax before or after your guided hike. Gray’s Woods Park borders the preserve’s entrance and includes a small playground with a whimsical wetland theme that will entertain and engage younger children. Graysdale Park is less than a two-minute drive from the preserve and includes a walking path, playground, soccer field and basketball field.
After a hike and picnic at the playground or park, you can spend the rest of your day cooling off with a swim at Park Forest Community Pool located less than a 10-minute drive from the preserve and parks. The pool features a large outdoor lap and recreation pool, two waterslides, diving board, tot pool and a spray pad. The pool is open to the public with day passes available for purchase at the entrance. Discounted admission rates are available after 5 p.m. and outside food and beverages, excluding glass and alcohol, are permitted at the pool. For complete pool hours, rules, and fees visit the Centre Region Parks and Recreation website: www.crpr.org/aquatics.
A trip into the forest and a visit to a nearby park and community pool is a great recipe for a fun and relaxing afternoon outside. Additionally, time spent enjoying fresh air and sunshine also provides mood-boosting and heart-healthy benefits. For more information about the health benefits of spending time in nature, including improved sleep and reduced stress levels, visit the Centred Outdoors website: www.centredoutdoors/health.
Centred Outdoors is a program of ClearWater Conservancy, and all events are free, and open to the public. Visit www.centredoutdoors.org to view full event details, safety and planning tips, and the entire 2022 schedule.
