State College woman seriously injured after head-on collision on North Atherton Street

A State College woman was seriously injured in a head-on collision early Thursday morning, borough police said.

State College police responded to the crash at about 2:15 a.m. on North Atherton Street at Hillcrest Avenue. A Ford Edge driven by a 28-year-old State College woman was traveling northbound when it crossed into the opposing lane and hit a southbound tractor-trailer head on, according to a news release.

Police and Centre LifeLink Emergency Medical Services extracted the unconscious woman from the vehicle before she was flown to the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center in Altoona for treatment of serious injuries. Police said the woman did regain consciousness.

The 63-year-old Altoona male in the tractor-trailer was not injured, police said.

Both vehicles were severely damaged and towed. North Atherton Street was closed for several hours between Blue Course Drive and Park Avenue.

Police are still investigating the cause of the crash.
