Local radio stations are changing their tune this year. Where to find your favorite music
It might be time to change your car radio presets, as several local stations are merging, changing or retiring brands in the wake of a media merger.
Seven Mountain Media, which has stations across Pennsylvania and New York, recently closed on a $17.3 million purchase of 34 stations from Forever Media, according to Jerry Valeri, programming and talent development specialist for Seven Mountains Media.
With the acquisition, several State College programs will merge or replace local Forever Media programming.
Valeri said State College was the only market where stations had to merge. Listeners who are confused about where to find their favorite stations should check Seven Mountains Media’s website, Valeri said.
“They’re gonna be a little confused at first, but then they’re gonna find us and they’re gonna still have familiar voices in the market,” Valeri said. “Jeff Brown is still on The Bus. (I’m) still on for 3WZ, so you’ll be able to find people that you’ve been listening to for years, decades. We’re still here. We’re just in new places.”
Here’s what State College stations have changed, been replaced or retired.
- Hot AC “95.3 3WZ” WZWW will replace Majic on 93.7.
- CHR “B94.5” WBHV-FM will move to 93.3 and 1390AM, rebranding as Pop Radio.
- Classic Hits “97.1 WOWY” will replace “HAPPY 103.1” WAPY, broadcasting on 103.1.
- Classic County “Bigfoot Legends 98.7” WLEJ will broadcast on 103.7, 104.3, 1450AM and 1260AM, replacing Forever Media’s Sports “ESPN 1450” and Variety Hits “104.3 Jack-FM.”
- News and Talk program 93.3 WRSC will move to 95.3 and be operated by Lightner Communications.
- Seven Mountains will take over Classic Rock “99.5 The Bus” WBUS and Country “Big Froggy 101.1” WFGE.
- “Majic 93.7,“ “Happy 103.1,“ and “ESPN 1450” brands will all be retired.
93.3 Pop Radio will launch under the brand Pop on Friday, according to Joe Wowk, market manager for Seven Mountains Media.
Four stations will be transferred to Covenant Communications, run by Seven Mountains chief operating officer Jim Loftus, including 95.3 WRSC. Programs for the other three stations, 94.5 WBHV-FM, 97.1 WOWY and 98.7 WLEJ, have yet to be announced.
“We are looking forward to bringing live local radio back to life and Happy Valley and we’re really excited for what’s ahead,” Valeri said.
