Heating oil spill in State College area under investigation by PA Environmental Protection agency
An oil spill in Ferguson Township is under investigation by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection.
The state DEP began a remedial response and an investigation into a report of “a sheen on the surface of a small stream and pools of red-dyed oil” in Ferguson Township after being contacted on Jan. 14, according to a release from the township.
The oil came from a residential home that no longer uses heating oil but “erroneously received a delivery of heating oil,” the release states. The oil was discharged into the basement where a sump pump then pumped some of the heating oil into an unnamed tributary to Beaver Branch, according to the release.
Local authorities, as well as Rock Spring Water Company and the State College Borough Water Authority, have been notified. The DEP is the agency in charge of the clean up and investigation.
The size of the spill is unclear. The DEP did not immediately respond to a request for comment Tuesday.
