Spring must be getting closer, because construction season is about to begin in Centre County.

PennDOT plans to resume work on the Atherton Street construction project Monday.

The work zone stretches from Curtin Road to near Westerly Parkway, but the work next week will be concentrated in downtown State College.

Between Monday and next Thursday, crews will be preparing for water line installation work between College and Beaver avenues. While crews are saw-cutting on Atherton between College and Beaver, traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction with signals in flash mode and flaggers controlling traffic at intersections as needed.

Drivers on College Avenue approaching Atherton will also see delays.

Water line installation could begin as soon as March 7 and will necessitate a 60-hour detour on Atherton between College and Beaver.

“Please use caution when traveling through the work zone and do not follow construction equipment into the closed lane,” PennDOT said in a press release. “When approaching the work zone, use both lanes to the merge point to minimize traffic back-ups and shorten travel delays.”

HRI Inc. of State College is the contractor on the $30.7 million, three-year project, which is expected to be completed in fall 2024. More information on the project can be found at www.penndot.gov/AthertonStreet.
