Bellefonte woman killed in head-on crash along U.S. Route 322, State College police say
A Bellefonte woman died Wednesday in a head-on crash with a semitrailer on a major highway, State College police said.
A 68-year-old woman driving an SUV crossed into oncoming traffic about 12:30 p.m. Wednesday along the 5600 block of U.S. Route 322 in Harris Township, borough police Lt. Kelly Aston said. Her name was not released.
The collision occurred where the the highway is reduced to two lanes separated by a yellow centerline. Drugs and alcohol are not believed to be a factor. An investigation is ongoing, Aston said. Autopsy and toxicology results are pending, which typically are not returned for several weeks.
The woman died before she could be transported to a hospital. The driver of the semitrailer was not injured, Aston said.
Mount Nittany Expressway was closed for more than four hours. Centre LifeLink EMS, the Boalsburg and Alpha fire companies, and the Centre County Accident Reconstruction Team assisted.
There were three fatal crashes during the past decade in Harris Township, state Transportation Department data showed. That was the fewest of any municipality in the Centre Region, except Halfmoon Township.
