State College residents displaced after early Saturday morning house fire

Residents of a home on Smithfield Street in State College were displaced after a fire early Saturday morning.

Alpha Fire Company was dispatched to the two story, single-family home at 1:04 a.m. for a report that residents had woken up to a house full of smoke. While initial reports were that the occupants were unable to get out because of the smoke, Alpha Fire Chief Jason Troup said that six people — four residents and two guests — had evacuated by the time crews arrived.

“Everybody was out of the house and there was still quite a bit of smoke, and then our guys entered and found the fire to be in the basement,” he said.

No injuries were reported.

A broken water line helped extinguish the fire, which was near the electrical panel and required West Penn Power to shut off electricity before firefighters could finish their work, Troup said.

The fire damage was minimal but there’s smoke damage throughout the house, and Troup said the Red Cross is assisting those affected.

Alpha firefighters were on the scene for about two hours. State College police and Centre LifeLink EMS also responded.
