Roof level of State College parking deck closed after cracking in structural beam
Editor’s note: This story has been updated after a Wednesday update from State College Borough.
The entire roof level of a downtown State College parking deck is temporarily closed after some cracking on a structural beam was found this week.
During a routine walk-through of the McAllister Parking Deck on Tuesday, the State College parking department noticed “some cracking on a structural beam,” according to a release from the borough. The beam was secured with a temporary structure to help support the weight until a contractor could be on site on Wednesday.
The structural engineer completed a survey of the parking deck, located at 132 McAllister St., a release on Wednesday stated. The borough said it would temporarily close the entire roof level of the facility, effective immediately, “out of an abundance of caution.” The rest of the parking deck has been cleared as safe to park, the borough said.
This closure will be in effect until additional support structures can be put in place.
“The work is anticipated to take place later this week or early next week, depending on the availability of materials,” the release states.
Anyone with parking permits for the rooftop level of the garage will need to park in Pugh Street Garage until the work to McAllister Parking Deck is finished.
