Work is set to begin Monday to preserve a bridge on the eastern side of State College, the state Department of Transportation wrote in a statement.

Preserving the bridge that’s situated on University Drive over College Avenue will improve safety and ride quality, PennDOT wrote Tuesday. Nearly 11,700 vehicles cross the bridge daily.

University Drive will be closed and a detour using East College Avenue, Porter Road and East Park Avenue will be put in place. The detour will be about two miles.

PennDOT expects the $2 million project to be completed by mid-August. Charles S. Hann Inc. is the contractor. The bridge on University Drive is one of three to be improved under the contract; the others are expected to see work in early 2025.
