Local motorcyclist killed in crash near State College, police say. Investigation ongoing
A motorcyclist died Monday after being hit during rush hour by a driver in College Township, State College police wrote in a press release issued Tuesday.
A 22-year-old man was hit about 4:20 p.m. Monday at the intersection of East College Avenue and Struble Road, police wrote.
A 73-year-old man driving a Toyota Prius turned left onto Struble Road when he collided with the motorcyclist, who was driving east on East College Avenue, police wrote.
The motorcyclist was ejected and flown by a medical helicopter to UPMC Altoona, where he was pronounced dead, police wrote. The driver was treated at the scene for minor injuries, police wrote.
Neither alcohol nor drugs are believed to be a factor in the crash, police wrote. An investigation is ongoing.
Their names were not released; the department wrote that information was withheld until family members are notified. Police also did not identify specifically where the men are from, describing them only as local.
Borough police were assisted by Centre LifeLink EMS, Alpha Fire Department and fire police, and the Centre County Accident Reconstruction Team.
Fatal motorcycle crashes generally decreased during the past decade in Centre County, state Department of Transportation data showed. Fourteen such crashes were reported from 2014-18, though only three were reported during the next five-year period, 2019-23.
During the two decades covered by PennDOT data, only one other deadly motorcycle crash was reported in College Township. It was reported in 2012.
