Lane on Centre County bridge on Interstate 99 closed for repairs due to extreme heat
A lane of Interstate 99 southbound is closed in Centre County for at least a few days after the extreme heat this week caused a slab of concrete to expand and buckle.
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation said the right lane of a bridge on I-99 southbound spanning Route 550 (Buffalo Run Road) between mile markers 67.8 and 67.6 was closed Tuesday night for emergency repairs.
The lane is expected to remain closed Wednesday while work to excavate the existing slab and pour new concrete is done. PennDOT said depending on the weather, work will move to the left lane on Thursday to complete the repairs before both lanes reopen.
While repairs are being made, the speed will be reduced to 45 mph to enhance safety. State police will be there to help with any traffic backlogs.
Centre County has been under a heat advisory this week, which continues until 8 p.m. Wednesday. The heat index value — a measure of how hot it feels when factoring in air temperature and humidity — could reach 100 degrees, according to the heat advisory issued by the National Weather Service.
