A bone unearthed Wednesday at a downtown State College construction site was determined to be from cattle — not a human, a possibility that investigators considered but quickly ruled out.

A construction worker uncovered the bone about 2:55 p.m. Wednesday while doing excavation work in the 100 block of South Fraser Street, borough police said in a press release.

With the assistance of the Centre County Coroner’s Office and the Mercyhurst Archaeological Institute, the department said by 5:25 p.m. that the bone was “cattle in origin.”

Police previously said they were in the process of “determining whether this item is human or other animal in origin.”
