Lanes, off-ramps on major Centre County highways to close for more than 2 months
A highway reconstruction project will impact Interstate 99 and U.S. Route 322 in the State College area beginning next week with detours in place for more than two months, the state’s department of transportation said in a news release.
Beginning Tuesday, the right lane of I-99 southbound, near Exit 61/Port Matilda, and on U.S. Route 322 westbound near the Innovation Park/Penn State exit, will be closed. During the closure, the off-ramps at both exits will be closed and a detour will be in place. PennDOT expects the exits will be closed, and the detours will remain in place, until early June.
For the Port Matilda exit, the detour will take drivers off of I-99 at Exit 68/Grays Woods-Waddle, and they’ll take Route 3042 (Skytop Mountain Road) to Alternate 220 and follow it to Port Matilda, PennDOT said.
For the Innovation Park/Penn State exit, drivers will continue along Route 322 westbound and merge onto I-99 southbound, and take Exit 71/Woodycrest-Toftrees. They’ll follow Waddle Road to the on-ramp for I-99 northbound, merge onto I-99 northbound, and take it back to Route 322 eastbound and the Innovation Park/Penn State University exit on the eastbound side, the release states.
Mount Nittany Medical Center said those with appointments at the medical center between April and July should build in extra travel time to get to appointments, as the closures will impact their travel.
When the work is complete on the right lanes, work will shift to the left lanes.
The $1.8 million project consists of highway reconstruction, guide rail installation, line painting and other miscellaneous construction, and is expected to be completed by the end of August. Francis J. Palo, Inc., of Clarion is the contractor.
