A State College woman died Wednesday after a high-speed, rollover crash at an intersection, where borough police said her vehicle nearly struck another driver and a pedestrian before overturning.

Video footage showed the woman traveling northbound about 11:13 a.m. Wednesday on Allen Street at a high rate of speed, police wrote in a press release. She entered the intersection using the westbound turn lane and continued north.

Police said she left the roadway — narrowly missing a southbound driver and a northbound pedestrian — and continued across a lawn. She then struck a cement retaining wall on Sunrise Terrace, going airborne before the vehicle landed on its roof.

It’s unclear what may have led to the crash, which is under investigation.

The woman was unresponsive when borough police officers arrived. Alpha Fire Co. and Centre LifeLink EMS extricated her and attempted life-saving efforts, but she was pronounced dead after transport to Mount Nittany Medical Center.

She was the only occupant of the vehicle and no other injuries were reported, police wrote. The department withheld her identification pending notification of family members.

Those with information were asked to call police at 814-234-7150, email police@statecollegepa.us or submit an anonymous tip online.

There were six fatal crashes over the previous decade in State College, according to state Department of Transportation statistics. Half were reported at an intersection and speeding was a factor in one of them.
