The State College Area school board unanimously voted to approve a second five-year contact for Superintendent Bob O’Donnell during a regularly scheduled meeting Monday night.

O’Donnell, who began his tenure with SCASD in 2011, thanked the board for its confidence.

“Although our school community has made some impressive progress during the past few years, I’m excited to continue working with our teachers, staff, students, board of directors and community. For such a strong district to become even better, it will continue to take all of us pulling in the same direction,” O’Donnell said.

Board President Amber Concepcion also expressed the group’s gratitude for the superintendent’s service.

“His dedication to high-performing schools and his commitment to the well-being and growth of our students have been exhibited throughout his time with us,” Concepcion said.

Later in the evening, the board also voted unanimously to approve the first set of high school project change orders that were presented during the last meeting on Feb. 8.

The seven substitutions approved Monday night total $678,000 in savings.

In some instances, such as in the science labs, the alterations reflect changes in keeping with modern times. Drain piping originally intended to prevent corrosion by acids that were dumped in sinks was eliminated on the grounds that it is no longer considered standard operating procedure.

At the South Building, the original plan to apply restoration coatings to portions of the roof was abandoned in favor of a credit offered by the general contractor to install new roofing in those spots instead.

Smaller changes include using aluminum conductors instead of copper ones or allowing the roofing subcontractor to shop fabricate a metal roof edge instead of purchasing it from a manufacturer.

The board continued to discuss a second group of proposed change orders that is scheduled to be voted upon during a meeting March 14.

This cluster would include substitutions to the proposed stone veneer at the South Building and changes to some of the the project’s specified ceramic wall tile.

Action will potentially take place on a third set of cost alterations pertaining to millwork and other items on March 28.
