State College collision blamed on obstructed view

A motorcyclist was taken to the hospital Thursday after an afternoon downtown collision.

According to State College police, Rosati Christinia, 23, of Clearwater, Fla., was attempting to make a left turn from East Calder Way onto South Pugh Street in her Jeep when she struck motorcyclist Gary Silverman, 59, of State College, who was heading north on Pugh. Christinia said her view of Pugh Street was blocked by a truck facing northbound parked along Pugh.

Police responding to the crash noted a truck parked along Pugh completely blocking the crosswalk and blocking the view of all westbound traffic on Calder and northbound traffic on Pugh, police said. The officer met with the driver of the truck, who advised police that he was unable to park farther back, as he had been previously ticketed for parking outside of the loading zone.

Silverman was taken to Mount Nittany Medical Center and treated for a fractured right ankle, scrapes and bruises, police said.

An officer met with the borough parking manager, police said, who was aware of the sight issues raised by trucks stopping along Pugh. The manager said he was in the process of possibly removing the loading zone from Pugh Street.
