State College man facing simple assault, harassment charges

A State College man has been charged with simple assault and harassment after an incident with his girlfriend.

Ferguson Township police responded to a call at 10:17 p.m. Saturday at Dairy Queen at 310 W. Arron Drive to meet a woman with facial injuries.

The woman told police she was assaulted by her boyfriend, who was identified as Steven Michael Gawryla, according to an affidavit of probable cause. The woman said the two had gone to the restaurant at about 9:30 p.m. and returned to his house off the 1400 block of North Allen Street when an argument occurred. The affidavit did not detail the context of the argument.

Gawryla, 23, pushed her and punched her in the face with a closed fist, according to the affidavit. The woman had a laceration above her left eyebrow from the punch, according to the affidavit, and was taken by police to Mount Nittany Medical Center for stitches.

Unsecured bail was set at $5,000 by District Judge Carmine W. Prestia who scheduled a preliminary hearing for 8:30 a.m. Wednesday.
