They pleaded guilty to assaulting their baby. Now they are facing more charges.
An Osceola Mills couple who pleaded guilty to abusing their baby — leaving the then-3-week-old with broken legs, a cracked rib, lacerations and abrasions on her face and tears in her rectum — have been charged in a separate incident that occurred before the child was born.
Aaron Mills, 33, and, Stephanie McGuire, 23, were at an ultrasound appointment at Geisinger Medical Center in Philipsburg when they took an opportunity to steal from others, according to an affidavit.
A woman reported to state police at Philipsburg on Sept. 21, 2016, that a camera and wallet, which were placed under a cup holder in her vehicle’s center console, had been stolen when she was at the medical facility. About $2,000 was in the wallet, according to an affidavit.
Three days later, the woman searched Craigslist and recognized the camera, which had been put up for sale. Pictures of the camera had been taken on a bed with a light colored comforter with a variety of designs and a multicolored blanket. The woman attempted to arrange a purchase, but the seller backed out and removed the listing.
On Oct. 3, 2016, the woman received a Facebook notification that McGuire had liked her post on the social media site, according to an affidavit. The woman and her husband reviewed McGuire’s Facebook page and realized a picture of a bed, comforter and blanket were likely the same as the picture on Craigslist.
Another picture, dated Sept. 21, 2016, was of an ultrasound at Geisinger.
The woman reported what she discovered to state police, who then interviewed McGuire and Mills on Oct. 6, 2016. They observed the bed and comforter in McGuire’s apartment and asked her what information she could provide. McGuire provided the camera to police, and Mills admitted to taking it from a vehicle in Geisinger’s parking lot, according to the affidavit.
McGuire said in her statement that she remembered having her ultrasound and Mills later telling her that “he got a camera and she needed to put it online, so she did,” according to police.
McGuire and Mills reportedly told police they did not know anything about the wallet with $2,000 in it. They were charged with felony unlawful use of a computer, felony receiving stolen property, two counts of misdemeanor theft by unlawful taking, two counts of misdemeanor theft from a motor vehicle and misdemeanor receiving stolen property.
Mills will be sentenced in February for charges he pleaded guilty to in relation to the abuse of his daughter.
McGuire also pleaded guilty to charges, including felony endangering the welfare of children and misdemeanor simple assault, related to the abuse, with Clearfield County District Attorney Bill Shaw saying part of the agreement included cooperation with prosecution and testimony against Mills if that case went to trial.
On Tuesday, Mills was in court in Clearfield where his attorney tried to cancel a sexual predator assessment. Assistant District Attorney Jendi Schwab said that evaluation had already been completed, making the motion irrelevant.
