Man allegedly fled police on an ATV. Now he’s being charged.
A Clearfield County man faces a felony charge after allegedly fleeing from state police in an all-terrain vehicle over the weekend.
According to the criminal complaint filed by state police at Philipsburg, a trooper was on patrol in the Philipsburg borough Saturday when a black and yellow ATV side-by-side was observed traveling north on South Front Street. The trooper attempted to initiate a traffic stop, but the ATV reportedly accelerated away along Front Street, passing several vehicles in a no-passing zone.
The ATV was also observed going the wrong direction down a one-way street, police said, and ran multiple red lights along Railroad Street before heading up 9th Street. The ATV reportedly continued west on Troy Hill Road for about a half a mile before turning onto an ATV path, ending the pursuit.
Troopers were advised Monday that a 30-60 second Snapchat video had been taken by a female passenger in the ATV, police said, with a caption reading “piggies can’t catch us.”
Troopers interviewed the woman Monday, police said, who confirmed she was a passenger. According to the woman, the driver was identified as Justin K. Lutz, 24, of Lanse.
A second witness interviewed said she had spoken with the woman who noted she was going ATV riding with Lutz that day, police said. She reportedly said that when she saw the Snapchat video, she contacted the woman who told her “we just ran from the cops.”
Troopers also reviewed Lutz’s Facebook profile, police said, which showed “multiple” photos of a black and yellow ATV matching the vehicle from Saturday.
Lutz was arraigned Thursday before District Judge Allen Sinclair, according to court documents, and charged with a felony count of fleeing or attempting to elude officers, a misdemeanor count of reckless endangerment and 12 summary traffic offenses, including failure to stop at a red signal, driving the wrong way and reckless driving.
He was released on his own recognizance. A preliminary hearing is set for Feb. 7.
