A Penn State student talked about stealing money and showed off cash. Now he’s facing charges.
A Penn State student faces felony burglary charges after allegedly stealing money from fellow students in their residence hall.
Penn State police reported investigating a series of burglaries early Sunday in Stone Hall on the University Park campus. One female resident reported $50 had been taken from her room in the early morning hours, and a male resident reported $250 had been taken from his room.
The woman reported having contact with fellow Stone Hall resident Edgar R. Mauge, 19, of Andover, Mass., at about 1 a.m. Sunday, police said. Mauge had reportedly been wandering around the second floor and said he was looking for a binder clip.
The woman told him he could have one from her room, police said. Mauge then allegedly entered the woman’s room alone.
At around the same time, the male resident reported finding Mauge in his room, police said. When confronted, Mauge claimed he had been looking for a cup.
At about 10 o’clock that morning, the woman had spoken with other residents about Mauge’s “odd” behavior, police said. She was reportedly told Mauge had “flashed cash” and talked about stealing money. Both the man and the woman then discovered they had money missing.
In other interviews, police reported other residents saying Mauge had been talking about stealing money and showing a large wad of cash bound by a binder clip.
Mauge was taken into custody and arraigned Monday before District Judge Steven Lachman, according to court documents. He was charged with multiple felony counts of burglary and criminal trespassing, as well as misdemeanor counts of theft and receiving stolen property. Bail was set at $25,000 straight and he was taken to the Centre County Correctional Facility.
A preliminary hearing is slated for Feb. 7.
