New Centre County school board member faces DUI charges
A freshly elected Bald Eagle Area School District board member was accused of DUI less than three days after he was voted to the position.
State police at Rockview in November found Gary Heverly asleep inside a vehicle at the intersection of Swamp Poodle Road and Tracey Dale Road. An open can of Miller Lite was in the cup holder, along with two open 12-packs, police wrote in an affidavit of probable cause filed in December.
Heverly, who smelled of alcohol, told an officer he consumed alcohol earlier that evening, police wrote.
Heverly, 49, of Bellefonte, later failed standard field sobriety tests and registered a blood alcohol content of 0.19%, police wrote. The legal threshold for driving is 0.08%.
Heverly, who was charged with two misdemeanor counts of DUI and two summary citations, declined to comment by phone Tuesday.
He made the board aware of the allegations during a December meeting, BEA Superintendent Jeff Miles said Tuesday. The district did not disclose the information to the public because the case is pending, he said.
Heverly’s preliminary hearing is scheduled for Feb. 12.
