Former Penn State fraternity member sentenced in death of Timothy Piazza
A former Penn State fraternity member who plied a pledge with vodka the night he was fatally injured in a series of falls was sentenced Thursday to one year of probation.
Bohan Song apologized to the parents of Timothy Piazza, who died in February 2017 after a night of drinking alcohol in the Beta Theta Pi house. Jim and Evelyn Piazza did not attend Song’s sentencing in the Centre County Courthouse Annex.
“I’d like to take this opportunity to offer my sincerest apologies to the Piazza family for both my actions as well as inaction,” Song said. “... Not a day goes by without the events of that night replaying in my mind and contemplating how a single action could have changed everything.”
County Judge Brian Marshall also sentenced Song, 22, of Delaware County, to 100 hours of community service and ordered him to pay a $3,500 fine.
Song pleaded guilty in August 2018 to two misdemeanor counts of furnishing alcohol to a minor. More than one dozen other members of the shuttered fraternity also pleaded guilty.
Two former fraternity leaders are still facing charges in the sprawling criminal case, while a third former member is appealing his conviction.
Former fraternity president Brendan Young, 25, of Philadelphia, and former pledge master Daniel Casey, 23, of New York, still face misdemeanor charges of hazing. Their cases are on hold pending an appeal to the state Superior Court.
Braxton Becker, 24, of New York, appealed his destruction of evidence conviction to the state Superior Court.
