Prior Centre County resident sentenced to prison for fatal Clearfield County crash

A man who lived in Centre County when he caused a head-on crash that killed a woman and seriously injured her husband was sentenced Monday to at least two years in state prison, Clearfield County’s top prosecutor said Tuesday.

Steven A. Hunt, 28, was sentenced by Clearfield County President Judge Fredric J. Ammerman to a maximum of six years in prison, Clearfield County District Attorney Ryan Sayers said.

The October 2021 crash along U.S. Route 322 in Clearfield County killed C. Elaine Mravetz, a 74-year-old grandmother from Ohio. She enjoyed canoeing, singing in a church choir and gardening, according to her obituary.

Robert J. Mravetz, her husband of 41 years, was seriously injured in the crash.

Hunt, state police at Clearfield wrote in an affidavit of probable cause, swerved into oncoming traffic to avoid a rear-end crash. Traffic slowed when a commercial vehicle approached train tracks that crossed the highway, police wrote.

Hunt slammed his 2005 GMC Sierra pickup into Robert Mravetz’s 2011 Toyota Tacoma, police wrote. Mravetz and his wife were flown by medical helicopter to UPMC Altoona for treatment.

Robert Mravetz and other family members were among those who read statements to Ammerman before Hunt’s sentence was handed down, Sayers said.

“It was hard for them losing a mother and — in the victim’s case — his wife,” Sayers said.

Hunt’s driver’s license was suspended and he did not have valid car insurance at the time of the crash, police wrote.

He pleaded guilty to one felony count each of homicide by vehicle and aggravated assault by vehicle, Sayers said. A message was left Tuesday with Clearfield County Public Defender Kenneth Pennington.

Hunt, who lived in Huston Township at the time of the crash, was listed Tuesday with an address in Potter County.
