A Centre County man was charged Monday with attempted homicide after what police described as a bloody altercation that left a woman injured and fearing for her life.
Jason L. Hannon, 44, was arrested after the woman told Spring Township police he attempted to stab her with a kitchen knife and suffocate her about 7:40 a.m. Monday inside a home along the 800 block of Halfmoon Street.
He was denied bail and is incarcerated at the Centre County Correctional Facility. No defense lawyer was listed and the Centre County Public Defender Office said it was not representing him as of Monday afternoon.
Officers were dispatched Monday morning after a passerby reported hearing a woman yell for help and tell someone to “Get off of me,” the township’s detective wrote in an affidavit of probable cause. When they arrived, they were met by a woman who was visibly upset and bleeding from her face and hands.
She said she woke up about 7:30 a.m. Monday to loud music that she attempted to turn off before Hannon placed her into what she described as a “bear hug.” She ran away, but Hannon followed and began to shove an article of clothing in her mouth at knifepoint, police wrote.
He made several threatening statements, police wrote, including “I’m going to kill you and then make you kill me.” She had a swollen lip, blood on her face, handprints on her neck and a defensive wound on her hand, police wrote.
The altercation continued in several other areas of the house. Hannon blocked her from leaving through either the front or back door and the woman told officers she contemplated jumping out of a window because she believed he would kill her if she did not get out of the house, police wrote. She left once officers arrived.
Hannon, meanwhile, barricaded himself in the house for nearly an hour. He eventually dropped the bloody knife out of a second floor window and peacefully surrendered, police wrote. He was treated at Mount Nittany Medical Center for a self-inflicted stab wound and was discharged to police about 11:15 a.m.
Bloody bedsheets and pajama pants were among the items officers found in the house, police wrote. Hannon admitted there was an altercation in the living room but that he “blacked out” after, police wrote.
He’s also charged with felony counts of aggravated assault and strangulation, as well as misdemeanor counts of unlawful restraint, terroristic threats, possession of a weapon, simple assault and recklessly endangering another person. He’s also facing a summary count of harassment.
His preliminary hearing is scheduled for Oct. 1.
In a Facebook post, Spring Township thanked every other police department in Centre County for their assistance.
