A Bellefonte Area High School assistant football coach was charged Tuesday with driving under the influence after he crashed his pickup truck and told a police officer he drank several beers.
Matthew R. Masullo, 44, of Spring Township, was charged by summons with two misdemeanor counts of DUI. His blood alcohol content was 0.174%, Spring Township police wrote in an affidavit of probable cause. That’s about twice the legal limit.
No defense lawyer was listed, and a phone number associated with Masullo did not immediately return a message Wednesday from the Centre Daily Times.
He is still listed as an assistant coach on MaxPreps, which was last updated Saturday. Bellefonte Area School District Superintendent Roy A. Rakszawski said the district became aware of the charges and the “facts surrounding the incident” Wednesday.
Athletic Director Duffy Besch was preparing a message to parents of the players Wednesday afternoon, which Rakszawski said will be released “soon.”
“While we cannot comment on the specifics of this situation because it is a personnel matter, be assured that we are taking the matter very seriously,” Rakszawski wrote in an email to the CDT. “We are following our District’s policies and procedures, and we are committed to ensuring the safety and well being of our students.”
Masullo crashed his 2019 GMC Sierra about 5:40 p.m. Aug. 16 near the intersection of Mill Street and Axemann Road, police wrote. The officer said Masullo smelled of alcohol, slurred his speech and had red, watery eyes.
He said he drank three or four beers at the nearby Axemann Brewery, police wrote. Masullo was then transported by ambulance to Mount Nittany Medical Center.
The nature of his injuries was not clear, and a message left with township police was not immediately returned. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for Nov. 26.
