A State College man faces aggravated assault while driving under the influence and other charges following a Spring Township crash that involved four vehicles and injured at least two people Saturday afternoon.
A 12-year-old child was flown to Geisinger Medical Center in Danville for serious injuries following the crash that happened at about 3 p.m. Saturday in the 800 block of Pleasant View Boulevard. The 12-year-old was the passenger in a vehicle that was struck head-on, Spring Township police wrote in a press release Saturday night. The adult woman driver of the vehicle that was struck was taken to Mount Nittany Medical Center with moderate injuries.
Esmanbek Umarov, 25, was driving a Mercedes SUV and attempted to pass in a no-passing zone when he struck the vehicle head-on in the wrong lane, police said.
Two other vehicles were damaged as a result of the initial crash, according to the press release.
The Centre County crash reconstruction team and other investigating officers also responded, along with the Logan and Undine fire companies.
The initial investigation found that Umarov was driving impaired and that both alcohol and controlled substances are believed to be factors, police said. He was arrested on charges including felony aggravated assault by vehicle while DUI, recklessly endangering another person, and careless and reckless driving.
Umarov was arraigned Saturday night by District Judge Kelley Gillette-Walker, who denied bail due to the “serious public safety risk.” He was remanded to the Centre County Correctional Facility and has a preliminary hearing set for Nov. 19.
