A Centre County woman was charged Wednesday with animal cruelty after a humane officer alleged she abandoned five dogs in freezing weather.

Tammy M. Auman, 54, of Boggs Township, admitted to abandoning her dogs the day after Thanksgiving in a remote area several miles north of Lock Haven, the officer wrote in an affidavit of probable cause.

Three of the dogs were captured, but two remain missing. No defense lawyer was listed and a phone number listed for Auman did not accept voicemails Thursday.

The Clinton County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals posted last month on Facebook that the organization was searching for lost dogs, describing it as “life or death.” The humane officer said the photos matched images he previously captured at Auman’s residence.

During an interview days later, the officer said Auman admitted to loading the dogs into her vehicle and driving for several hours before abandoning them in a wooded area. She later said she hoped they would “seek out other people who would care for them,” the officer wrote.

One of the dogs was treated by a veterinarian after it was found underweight and with porcupine quills in its face. Two others were being cared for at the Clinton County SPCA, which does not charge a fee to surrender an animal.

Auman was charged by summons with five misdemeanor counts of animal cruelty and five summary counts of animal neglect. Her preliminary hearing is scheduled for Feb. 25.
