A Philipsburg woman was indicted Thursday on charges that she stole nearly $73,000 in Social Security benefits.

Misti Weld, 51, was indicted by a federal grand jury on charges of theft of government property, false statements and Social Security fraud. She’s accused of taking the money from January 2016 until June 2023.

Grand jurors alleged Weld falsely and knowingly claimed on a Social Security form that her son lived with her. The form, according to the indictment, was used to determine Supplemental Security Income benefits.

She is accused of then converting the payments for her own use. Weld was awaiting her initial appearance as of Friday morning, which a spokesperson for federal prosecutors said had not yet been scheduled.

No defense lawyer was listed.
