A traffic stop Wednesday on a major Centre County highway led to felony drug charges after investigators said they uncovered two pounds of methamphetamine and more than 330 bags of fentanyl.
Joseph F. Alvin Jr., 41, of Clearfield County, was accused of transporting the drugs from Philadelphia. Pennsylvania Attorney General Dave Sunday said the drugs have an approximate street value of more than $30,000.
“This takedown disrupted the flow of large quantities of dangerous narcotics being transported from Philadelphia into Clearfield County,” Sunday said in a written statement Friday. “Drug traffickers who reap profits in smaller, rural communities should know that we, along with law enforcement partners, are watching all regions of the Commonwealth.”
A state police trooper said in an affidavit of probable cause that he stopped Alvin about 11:55 a.m. Wednesday for speeding and following a semitrailer too close on Interstate 80 in Marion Township.
After a state police K-9 alerted to the odor of a controlled substance, investigators said they obtained a search warrant and found the meth in the vehicle’s firewall.
Alvin’s passenger said she hid the fentanyl in her bra after being told to do so, investigators wrote. She was not charged after of Thursday afternoon. Sunday said the investigation is ongoing.
An opioid painkiller many times more powerful than heroin, fentanyl frequently appears as an illegal street drug mixed with other substances. The growing prevalence of fentanyl in the illicit drug supply is a top driver of the increasing number of overdose deaths in the U.S.
Alvin is charged with two felony counts of possession with intent to deliver, four misdemeanors and two summary traffic violations. District Judge Don Hahn set bail Wednesday at 10% of $405,000.
He is incarcerated at the Centre County Correctional Facility and his preliminary hearing is scheduled for Feb. 4. Centre County District Attorney Bernie Cantorna’s office will prosecute the case.
