Man found guilty on drug charges

A Port Matilda man was found guilty of use/possession of drug paraphernalia, though the jury could not reach a verdict on additional charges.

According to a news release Monday from the District Attorney’s Office, William R. Weaver, 61, was found guilty after a one-day jury trial. The charge stems from an incident on Sept. 11, 2014, in which State College police observed a vehicle registered to Weaver traveling at a “visibly high rate of speed” along South Atherton Street.

The pursuing officer witnessed numerous motor vehicle violations and activated his lights and siren, the release said, but the driver failed to comply. After entering an area of high vehicle and pedestrian traffic, the pursuit was terminated.

Weaver was taken into custody on Sept. 18, 2014, the release said. While at booking, he was seen acting suspiciously with an item in his shirt pocket. Officers removed a small plastic bag containing marijuana.

Judge Jonathan Grine presided over the trial, the release said. The jury was unable to reach a verdict on one count of fleeing or attempting to elude an officer and one count of recklessly endangering another person.
