Spring Township man arraigned in New Year’s Day stabbing
A Spring Township man has been charged and is awaiting his preliminary hearing after allegedly stabbing another man on New Year’s Day.
Javier Martinez Martinez, 41, was arraigned early Saturday morning before District Judge Kelley Gillette-Walker. Martinez was unable to post bail, which was set at $100,000.
According to the affidavit, on Friday at about 2:30 p.m., police responded to a call from Mount Nittany Medical Center, where Martinez’s alleged victim was receiving medical treatment for stab wounds.
According to police, the victim sustained injuries to his left hand and lacerations to his cheek, back and chin. The affidavit indicates the man also had cuts that severed multiple tendons in his right thumb. Police also took pictures of the victim’s stab wound to the back.
According to a witness who was at the hospital with the victim, Martinez was “extremely intoxicated” at the time the stabbing occurred.
According to the affidavit, a fight ensued between the two men over a woman the victim had asked to come and drink with him. According to the victim’s account to police, Martinez became enraged and attacked him.
When officers went to speak to Martinez at his home, which is located on a farm on Zion Road, they found him with “dried blood on his hands.” Court documents also indicate Martinez allegedly attempted to clean up the crime scene, as police found a bucket filled with bloody water. A knife, believed to be the weapon used in the stabbing, was found in the kitchen, along with a paper towel in the trash. Both items were covered in blood.
Martinez is at the Centre County Correctional Facility, where he is awaiting his preliminary hearing, which is scheduled for Jan. 13.
