Man facing charges after allegedly assaulting police

An 18-year-old man from Alexandria, Va., is facing charges after an alleged altercation with State College police.

Police were called to a home on West Fairmount Avenue early Saturday morning for a report of disorderly conduct.

When police located the suspect, Michael Ryan Bickerton, he tried to walk away, then became combative, according to police.

According to the affidavit, Bickerton attempted to flee, heading south on South Atherton Street, when he tripped and fell. He attempted to get back up, and was tackled to the ground by an officer.

He is facing charges of aggravated assault, a felony, and misdemeanor charges of escape, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct and driver’s license violations.

The officer involved sustained injuries to his knees, right elbow and hands.

Bickerton was arraigned on Saturday morning by District Judge Allen Sinclair. Sinclair set bail at a monetary $50,000. Bail was later changed to $50,000 unsecured.

His preliminary hearing is scheduled for Wednesday.
