Police believe man flown to UPMC Altoona was injured in an assault

A man was sent by medical helicopter early Saturday morning to UPMC Altoona after being found injured in the parking lot of Beaver Hill Apartments.

State College police Sgt. Todd Scholton said the initial call came in at 1:08 a.m. from a person claiming the man fell from an unknown height at the apartment building, located at 340 E. Beaver Ave.

However, after further investigation, police said they don’t think the man fell from the building.

“We believe the injuries are not the result of a fall but of an assault,” Scholton said.

The man suffered injuries to the left side of his face, but police said they did not know how serious those were.

“We’re still looking into it,” Scholton said. “There was a lot of people, and a lot of commotion and confusion about what had happened. There were reports from people who lived in apartments on the other side of the building that didn’t necessarily face where the man was found.”

The investigation is ongoing, he said.
