Where can you find the best colleges and universities in Pennsylvania? You might get a better idea by browsing the latest rankings published by Niche, a website offering data and ratings on K-12 schools and colleges across the U.S.

Niche annually develops its rankings using user-generated reviews and data from sources such as the U.S. Department of Education and the National Center for Education Statistics. The Pittsburgh-headquartered school search platform ranks colleges through the following major categories:

  • An academics grade, which is based on acceptance rate, quality of professors and student and alumni surveys on academics
  • A value grade, which incorporates average loan amounts, alumni earnings and student surveys on value
  • A professors grade, which evaluates the number of awards won by faculty, the student-to-faculty ratio and student surveys on professor quality

Colleges and universities are also graded on their campuses, diversity, student life, local areas, safety and student surveys on overall experience.

In total, Niche breaks down its overall grades for colleges and universities using the following overarching segments and weights:

  • Academics grade: 40%
  • Value grade: 27.5%
  • Professors grade: 7.5%
  • Campus grade: 5%
  • Diversity grade: 5%
  • Student life grade: 5%
  • Student surveys on overall experience: 5%
  • Local area grade: 2.5%
  • Safety grade: 2.5%

Some schools are not included in Niche rankings if they are missing significant data points the platform would use to compile each year’s report, according to the website’s methodology report. Colleges and universities that meet all required factors and instruct 500 or more full-time undergraduate students are considered eligible for a Niche-provided grade and numerical ranking.
