Coronavirus case confirmed on Penn State’s University Park campus, according to university

A case of COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus, has been confirmed on Penn State’s University Park campus, according to an alert text sent out by the university Tuesday afternoon.

It’s unknown at this point whether the infected person is a student, employee or otherwise — or what specific precautions the university might take.

“In any case of COVID-19 or other infectious disease, Environmental Health and Safety will take necessary action on campus property consistent with established health and safety practices,” spokesperson Wyatt DuBois said.

Penn State shifted to remote learning March 16, and students will not be allowed to return to campus earlier than May. Employees deemed nonessential, or those able to work remotely, are also not on campus at this time.

Centre County gained four new coronavirus cases Tuesday, boosting the total cases to seven, but it’s also not known whether the University Park case was included among those. The state Department of Health last updated its county-by-county cases at noon Tuesday; Penn State sent out the notice just before 3 p.m. Tuesday.

The DOH also lists cases of COVID-19 according to where the tested individual permanently resides, not where they were tested.

The county saw its first case of the novel coronavirus Friday.
