Penn State IFC bans all social activities at frats in response to COVID-19 pandemic

The Penn State Interfraternity Council has banned social activities at all fraternity chapters at the university indefinitely in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Penn State IFC, which is the governing body for all the 37 active fraternity chapters at the university, announced the decision Tuesday following a vote that involved all chapter presidents. In a release from the IFC executive board, the organization said its members and the university believe it is the best way to “support the health and safety of our community.”

There is no set date for when restrictions will be lifted, but IFC plans to work “closely” with the university to phase Greek organizations out of the moratorium.

“It is important to us that the residents of State College are not put at high risk as students return to campus this fall,” the IFC executive board wrote in the statement. “We strongly believe that this measure will greatly reduce that risk.”

The moratorium follows the University of Washington’s weekend announcement that at least 112 fraternity house residents tested positive for the coronavirus, bringing the total number of students infected on Greek Row to 121, as of Sunday.

Penn State’s IFC board will work with individual chapters to discuss member safety and precautions that can be made in order to reduce the risks posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, including updating their risk management plans, making masks accessible and reducing capacity at houses.

“We want to remind members within the Penn State community how important it is to adhere to the government policies and expectations, including wearing a mask and maintaining social distancing,” IFC wrote. “We applaud those who are taking the proper steps to promote safety and continue to encourage these activities as we work together to maximize the safety of our community and those who surround us.”
