Penn State student dies in off-campus apartment; cause of death likely not due to COVID-19
A 20-year-old Penn State student died sometime Sunday morning in an off-campus apartment, according to university and local officials.
The circumstances surrounding the death of Nicholas Papadopoulos, a College of Engineering student, were not immediately known. A State College police spokesperson said nothing criminal was suspected to have occurred and referred all questions to the county coroner’s office.
Centre County Coroner Scott Sayers said an autopsy was scheduled to be conducted Wednesday, and toxicology results won’t be available for up to six more weeks.
Based on “preliminary scene investigation,” the death does not appear to be COVID-19 related, Sayers said in a news release. Still, the cause of death is not yet known.
“We offer our deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Nicholas, who was studying industrial engineering at Penn State,” a university spokesperson added. “While circumstances and cause of death are being investigated, we are providing support to the family, roommates and others directly affected.”
