Bargain hunters and Penn Staters looking for mementos could soon converge during a five-day sale that will look to sell most items within the guest rooms of the Nittany Lion Inn, an on-campus hotel that is set to be sold to an outside company.

The sale will take place at the 223-room Nittany Lion Inn (200 W. Park Ave., State College) from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Dec. 5-9. Items include — but are not limited to — televisions, armoires, artwork, couches, dressers, chairs, nightstands, lamps and beds.

Prices are not yet available and are still being worked on according to one university official, who also said they’ll be made “very affordable.”

“There will be a large quantity of each inventory type,” added Diane Espy, director of marketing and communications for Penn State’s Auxiliary and Business Services. “And yes, there will be set prices, which will be available at the time the sale begins.”

The inn will not be open to the public prior to the sale, and items must be taken when purchased. Credit cards, cash and checks will all be accepted.

The upcoming sale comes a little more than five months after the university announced its two hotels, the iconic Nittany Lion Inn and the Penn Stater Hotel & Conference Center, will be sold and ground-leased to The Scholar Hotel Group, which was founded by Penn State alum Gary Brandeis. It is not known where negotiations stand, how much the final price might be or how long the ground-lease might last.

“The university will continue to own the land that the hotels sit on, but the buildings would be owned by Scholar with a long-term ground lease,” Sara Thorndike, senior vice president for finance and business, said in June. “Eventually, at the end of the long-term ground lease, the buildings would come back to be owned by the university to reevaluate operations.”

The Penn Stater is expected to remain in operation through the transition of ownership. The Nittany Lion Inn is currently closed and is expected to remain closed until 2024.

Proceeds from the Dec. 5-9 furniture sale will go toward costs centered on removing all furniture, fixtures and equipment from the Nittany Lion Inn. Any remaining items after the sale will be brought to the Lion Surplus store, at the corner of Services Road and Big Hollow Road.

Lion Surplus is hosting the weeklong sale.
