A first of its kind event is coming to Beaver Stadium this spring, giving people the chance to go “Over the Edge” and raise money for the Centre County United Way.

Participants can register now for the May 19 Over the Edge event at Beaver Stadium. The first 107 people who reach the $1,500 fundraising minimum will be selected to rappel 110 feet from the west side of the stadium. Donations are collected through the online fundraising platform, and a limited number of sponsorship opportunities are also available.

All proceeds from the event will benefit the Centre County United Way, which is partnering with Penn State for the unique fundraiser.

“Penn State is a proud and steadfast supporter of the Centre County United Way, which supports our neighbors in need through responsive, individualized services at the intersections of health, education and financial stability,” Penn State President Neeli Bendapudi said in a statement. “This event represents months of collaboration between Penn State and the United Way, and we are excited to see it become a reality.”

Part of the effort will also include challenges between academic and business units at Penn State to reach fundraising goals, according to a news release.

“We are thrilled about the exciting Over the Edge event to be held at Beaver Stadium and we are most grateful for Penn State’s continued commitment to support Centre County United Way, our partner agencies, and, most importantly, our neighbors,” Paula Williams, executive director of the Centre County United Way, said in a statement.

While it’s the first rappelling event at Beaver Stadium, other Over the Edge events have been held locally to raise money for nonprofits. In 2018, about 70 people rappelled down the Fraser Centre in downtown State College in an Over the Edge event that benefited Interfaith Human Services and FaithCentre. The event was repeated the next year, raising more than $86,400 for the local nonprofits.
