‘Happy to be able to bring back a tradition.’ Milkshakes return to Penn State Berkey Creamery

It’s true: Milkshakes are back at Penn State’s Berkey Creamery after a three-year hiatus.

Shakes, now selling for $9, have been gone since March 2020 but have returned in four flavors: Chocolate, Vanilla, Peachy Paterno and Bittersweet Mint.

James Brown, manager of sales and marketing, said the shop runs more efficiently without the added time and processes to make a milkshake, which was part of their lengthy absence on the menu. Brown said the Creamery is taking “baby steps” right now before considering including any of the Creamery’s other flavors.

“We have new equipment that actually does it completely enclosed,” Brown said. “It takes less time, the blending method is smoother and quieter, and I think it’s just going to be an overall better process.”

Brown said he hopes the addition will be permanent but his main focus is the overall experience for all customers and for the Creamery. Creamery staff also has to learn how to incorporate milkshakes, which take 5-10 times longer to make than regular cones, into the workflow. With high student staff turnover, Brown said none of the current Creamery staff were around when milkshakes were last on the menu.

“I’m very proud of our store managers who have worked very diligently in getting this program back,” Brown said. “I’m very excited about looking into the future to see how well they can continue with the efficiency, and we’re just happy to be able to bring back a tradition that’s been here for so long.”
