Penn State Berkey Creamery now offering new ‘gourmet’ treat in store, online
A new frozen treat has arrived at the iconic Berkey Creamery — and even dairy-free visitors are now able to indulge.
The 158-year-old on-campus creamery announced Tuesday that it is now offering dairy-free sorbet both in-store and online. Sorbet, also known as water ice, is currently available in cherry and lemon flavors.
“We’ve been listening to our customers’ feedback and are thrilled to introduce our new dairy-free options,” James Brown, manager of sales and marketing at the Berkey Creamery, said in a news release. “Our product-development team has been working hard on creating the best dairy-free option that aligns with our high standards for both quality and taste.”
A scoop of sorbet in-store costs the same as a scoop of ice cream at $6. Three-gallon tubs, which are sold online with shipping included, are also identical in price at $135 online and $56 in-store.
The university described its sorbet as “a gourmet frozen dessert made from fruit juice and sugar with a texture similar to a sherbet.” (Sherbet contains a small amount of dairy.) Sorbet has fewer calories than ice cream and is fat free. A full ingredients list can be found online.
The Creamery, known for its dairy products like ice cream and cheese, boasts a number of other non-dairy offerings such as coffee, juices, lemonade and iced teas. Sorbet is expected to remain a permanent non-dairy offering, and the flavors will eventually rotate in scooping availability throughout the year.
The Creamery is open 7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 7:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday; 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday; and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday.
