Penn State fraternity suspended 4 years following university investigation into hazing
A Penn State fraternity, Kappa Alpha Psi, has been suspended through fall 2027 after an investigation into hazing, the university announced Tuesday.
The exact hazing allegations and how many people were involved were not made known.
Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. was placed on interim suspension in August during an investigation by Penn State’s Office of Student Accountability and Conflict Response. Last month, the local chapter was found in violation — which was upheld on appeal.
The formal suspension began Monday and was publicly announced Tuesday.
“We hold the health and safety of students as our highest priority and take all allegations of hazing seriously,” Andrea Dowhower, interim vice president for Student Affairs, said in a written statement. “It is disappointing and concerning when, despite the legal obligations and educational efforts, groups violate our expectations.
“We urge all student organizations to understand that any attempt to demean, harass, injure or endanger any student who is simply trying to be a member of their organization is hazing. And all forms of hazing are against Penn State policy and against Pennsylvania law.”
Pennsylvania law defines hazing, in part, as “any action or situation which recklessly or intentionally endangers the mental or physical health or safety of a person.” Again, the exact charges against Kappa Alpha Psi are not known.
As a result of the university suspension, Kappa Alpha Psi loses all rights and privileges as a recognized student organization. It can no longer participate in or organize any functions or activities, including university-wide events such as Homecoming and Thon.
It was not immediately clear if the frat planned to operate independently during its university suspension. The fraternity’s national organization did not immediately respond to a message seeking comment.
Kappa Alpha Psi’s Penn State chapter started in 1952. Based on public information from Student Affairs, the frat currently has three members.
