A Penn State fraternity has been suspended through spring 2028, the university announced Wednesday.

Pi Delta Psi fraternity was placed on organizational suspension effective Nov. 21, a release from university states. It was suspended after an investigation found that during the 2024 spring semester, the Tau chapter hazed new members — including coerced high-risk alcohol consumption.

After the suspension is lifted and the fraternity is recognized again, it will have an additional year of organized conduct probation.

When a fraternity is on suspension, it loses all privileges of a recognized student organization, the release states. It can’t participate in, attend or organize any functions, activities or events, and is not able to function as a sanctioned organization at Penn State.

The release states the local chapter and national organization are both aware of the investigation outcome.

The university alerted students and families of a significant increase in hazing reports earlier in the semester. As of Oct. 17, the university had received more than 70 fraternity- and sorority-life-related reports of “conduct issues” in the semester. That number includes hazing but it isn’t exclusive to hazing and includes both recognized and unrecognized groups.

In addition to Pi Delta Psi, the university has a number of other suspended fraternities listed on its Student Affairs website:

  • Beta Theta Pi Fraternity: Suspended permanently for hazing violations.

  • Delta Sigma Iota Fraternity, Inc.: Suspended through May 29, 2026 for hazing, alcohol and/or drug violations and other university policy violations.

  • Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.: Suspended through Sept. 11, 2027 for hazing violations.

  • Kappa Sigma Fraternity: Suspended through Dec. 13, 2024 for failure to comply with a directive or condition and other university policy violations.

  • Phi Kappa Sigma Fraternity (Skulls): Suspended through fall 2027 for hazing violations. (This frat has continued to operate unsanctioned by the University or inter/national organization; the university “strongly recommend students do not engage with this chapter.”)

  • Pi Delta Psi: Suspended through spring 2028 for hazing violations with an additional year of probation extending through spring 2029 after a successful re-recognition.

  • Theta Delta Chi Fraternity: Suspended through spring 2025 for failure to comply with a directive or condition and other university policy.
